Vancouver Film School Workshop in Kyiv

FILM.UA Faculty with a support of DEC education presented the practical course “From script to screen: filmmaking workshop” by the leading experts of Vancouver Film School (VFS) on February 23, 24 and 25. 

The course was designed for high school students of 15-17 years old.

The practical filmmaking course tought the processes during film production and included the following:

  • professions and production stages;
  • screenwriting and storytelling / practical screenwriting;
  • film production: pre-production, production, post-production;
  • acting / preparation, rehearsal, shooting;
  • work with a frame, art of cinematography;
  • single frame shooting, camera movements, composition;
  • editing.

Vancouver Film School (VFS) was founded in 1987 and is located in Vancouver, Canada. The school specializes in training professionals for film and television, offering programs, which covers all types of activities in the field of screen arts. A unique educational model allows students to master the chosen profession in just one year during an intensive program, at the end of which graduates receive diplomas and invaluable practical experience, demanded in the film and television industries. 

Among school's alumni

  • Chad Moffitt, the alumnus of Digital Character Animation program – his team won Oscar for their work on trilogy “The Lord of the Rings”;
  • Lon Molnar, the alumnus of 3D Animation and Visual Effects program – established the company Intelligent Creatures, among the works of which such movies as “Chicago”, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”, “Babel”, “Watchmen” and others;
  • Alec McClymont, the alumnus of 3D Animation and Visual Effects program – in 2007 he won Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for series “Battlestar Galactica”. In the same year he got Gemini and Visual Effects Society Award;
  • Mark Shirra, the alumnus of 3D Animation and Visual Effects program – due to his student work, he was hired for Pixar. Afterwards, he worked on animated movie “WALL-E”; 
  • Jeremy Bowker and Jessica Lemes da Silva, the alumni of Sound Design for Visual Media program. Jeremy worked on animated movie “Ratatouille”, which was nominated for Oscar as well as Disney’s animated musical “Enchanted”. Jessica worked on such projects as “Beowulf” and “Iron Man”.



Jennifer Clement  Head of the Acting Department at VFS.

She has been teaching for ten years, sharing her years of experience and passion for acting with her students. Jennifer has acted in over 100 theater, film and TV projects in the course of her professional career across Canada and into the US. She has worked on such projects as “Supernatural”, “Da Vinci’s Inquest”, “Fido” and others.


Michael Baser – Head of Department, Writing for Film and Television at VFS.

Michael is a famous screenwriter, producer and showrunner with an outstanding working experience for more than 38 years. He has worked with such companies as 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, Disney, Columbia TriStar and Warner Bros. Michael’s credits include “Full House”, “Good Times”, “The Jeffersons” and others. 


Darren Borrowman – Production Manager of the Acting Department at VFS.

His credits include “Smallville”, “The X-Files: I Want to Believe”, numerous award-winning shorts, he is a director of the indie feature “Do Something with Your Life” and producer/editor on the brand new “Charlotte’s Song”.

Filming in Vancouver

Due to the large volume of film and television production, Vancouver was awarded the title "Hollywood North" and is the third largest film production centre in North America after Los Angeles and New York with recording and ever-growing number of film and television productions. In Vancouver there are 800 companies, which work in the field of film, digital video, animation and visual effects, as well as the development of video games, mobile content and applications.

The list of the movies filmed in Vancouver with participation of VFS alumni: “I, Robot”, “Titanic”, “The Day After Tomorrow”, “Twilight”, “Hulk”, “Planet of the Apes”, “Catch Me If You Can”, “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”, “Good Will Hunting”, “Rambo”, “Highlander”, “The X-Files”, “Catwoman”, “Stargate”, “X-Men 2”, “Rocky IV”, “Jumanji”, “The Butterfly Effect”, “Fantastic Four”, “Fifty Shades of Grey” and others. 

Workshop was held at FILM.UA Faculty (22 Zakrevsky street, Kyiv, FILM.UA studio, entrance #2) in English without interpretation.
